John C. Comisi, DDS, MAGD, believes that the Zirc Color-Coded Organization System aids in dental office organisation and infection control, and adds a measure of cleanliness by inhibiting the growth of bacteria that causes stains and odours.

Implementation

“We were using metallic and hard white plastic instrument cassettes, and we found that the devices were not as effective as we would like since the closing apparatus failed to effectively hold the cassettes closed. Over time they started to rust in our sterilisation process. When we learned about the color-coded organization instrument products by Zirc, our office staff were really excited because now we could get the sizes needed for hygiene and the various procedures I perform, and could colour code them for those procedures. It makes tracking very easy, and we know that when we open up the sterile wrap we have the correct instruments for that procedure.”

Efficiency

“We have been using Zirc’s colour-coded organising products for more than a year now, and one of the greatest benefits has definitely been the efficiencies in having the right instrumentation for the procedure being done. We know by sight, when the sterile wrap is open, that we have what we need right there in front of us for the procedure, which makes our lives very easy.“

Streamlining Workflow

“In prepping instruments for sterilisation, Zirc’s locking covered tubs and trays for transport from the treatment room to sterilisation are very important for the safety of my staff and our patients. The risk of a sharps accident is significantly reduced, and the way that the instruments “lock” into the organizing cassettes enables us to have secure transfer of instruments and preparation for sterilisation. The instrument cassettes can then be loaded into our instrument washer, cleaned, dried, and wrapped for sterilisation. Everything we will use for that procedure is in that cassette, which is great peace of mind for my staff members and me.“

Inhibits Bacteria Growth

“Having the antimicrobial agent in Zirc products is an extremely important added benefit. Because the antimicrobial protection inhibits the growth of bacteria that can cause stains and odours, it provides an added measure of cleanliness. For that reason, I would highly recommend that every practice takes a close look at what Zirc brings to the dental office.”

Many of Zirc’s products have an antimicrobial agent built into the resin of their products, registered with the FDA and CE (holding ISO: 9001 and ISO: 13485 certifications). This antimicrobial product protection helps resist the growth of odour and stain-causing bacteria and mould.

Where to start? Follow these simple steps:

  1. Select a colour for each procedure you practice.

Example: Crown and Bridge = Neon Orange, Endo = Teal, Composite = Neon Blue

  • If you are a group practice, select a colour for each doctor and or surgery (for a solo practice skip this step).

Example: Dr. Smith = Neon Purple, Dr Khan = Neon Pink

  • Assess the number of procedures you do weekly (on average).

Example: Crown and Bridge = 10 per week, Endodontics = 20 per week, Composite = 12 per week

  1. Determine quantity of trays you will need for each procedure. Take your configured numbers from step 3 and divide them by the number of days your practice is open (always round your numbers up).

Example: 20 patients are seen in one working week for endo procedures and the surgery is open 5 days a week. Divide 20                by 5 to determine how many trays, cassettes and bur/endo holders are needed to organise for the endo procedure. Repeat                these steps for all other procedures.
