1. It is critical to obtain and maintain isolation of the preparation

Dr Osama Shaalan highlights how critical it is in cases such as the above, that the subgingival enamel margins are exposed after isolation, in order to create a perfect seal.

He also notes how one of the most vital factors for a successful composite restoration is obtaining and maintaining isolation of the preparation during the entire process of cleansing, treating the enamel and dentinal surfaces, and placing of the composite.

2. Use a quality Enamel shade to assist with building the palatal shell

Dr Osama Shaalan makes use of the White Dental Beauty Professional CompoSite system for this case, first making use of the Enamel shade to build a 0.3-0.5 palatal shell (free hand).

The shell was built using transparent strips supported by placing a finger on the palatal side.

3. Fill in the small proximal spaces

Dr Osama Shaalan advises to fill in the small proximal spaces with the body shade of a composite. From the White Dental Beauty Professional CompoSite system he selects dentin shade Si2, a high value shade of white - deemed by many an absolute must for restorative work on bleached or naturally white teeth.

4. If necessary, use different shades cervically and incisally before placing the final layer

Styleitaliano_SHL-1905-13

In some cases it can be necessary to use two body dentine shades before placing the final layer. Dr Osama Shaalan illustrates this in the case above, using the two shades:

  • White Dental Beauty CompoSite Si1 cervically
  • White Dental Beauty CompoSite Si 0.5 incisally

Both shades feature within the systems unique palette the 'five shades of white'; providing the optimum graduation between the varying lighter shades

Dr Shaalan recommends the body shades should be cured for 40 seconds with a 500 mW/cm2 minimum light source.

For the final layer Dr Shaalan returns to the Enamel shade from the White Dental Beauty professional CompoSite system, noting how it is used to create the illusion of a natural tooth.

The Enamel shade can really help with brightness, taking up the colour of the body material for a natural appearance.
