mucopren - the ideal denture liner for patient comfort

Mucopren: A Key Step In Achieving Patient Comfort

This article explains the uses and properties of Mucopren, and Roland Koek from E.K. Dental Team TTL, describes the five steps to applying the product for best results.

For the progressive clinician, the pursuit of products and procedures to enhance patient comfort is an integral part of daily practice. As all patients are different and no two cases are ever identical, evaluating results can be a tricky to measure, yet rewarding process. Amongst the array of before, during and aftercare methods available for the recovering implant patient and denture wearer, Mucopren’s proven effectiveness has earned itself a place at the top table.

Are you fed up with the soft layer of the denture base coming off? Tired of false promises over and over again when it comes to quality liners with a longer life-span than a few months? If the answer is yes, you may be pleasantly surprised with Mucopren® soft from Kettenbach.

Read on to discover the uses and properties of Mucopren, and how Roland Koek from E.K. Dental Team TTL, applies the product for best results.

What is Mucopren?
Mucopren: Achieving Patient Comfort With A Quality Liner

Mucopren® Soft is a permanently soft reline material created from vinyl polysiloxane for direct and indirect application, that lives up to its promise. It is easy to trim and guarantees a durable bond to the denture base. It is best suited to direct and indirect lining.

Why use Mucopren?

Mucopren® silicone sealer in the cartridge produces an excellent bond with the silicone liner, ensures easy handling and creates a smooth, shiny surface at the silicone/acrylic interface. The excellent mechanical properties of the silicone liner (e.g. tear resistance, elongation) ensure easy handling with a high loading capacity. Impressive features include a short curing time and adequate total working time.

Roland takes us step by step through the best method of use for Mucopren - for direct and indirect work, plus he shares some of his tips for achieving the best results.

Mucopren: Achieving Patient Comfort With A Quality Liner

Step one  -  application

Thoroughly clean the denture base with water only, and dry. Remove sufficient denture material up to the amount of the desired layer of permanently soft relining material with a bur. In order to achieve a good transition of permanently soft relining material
to the denture acrylic in the vestibular area, it is recommended that
you cut in a right angled edge.

Apply Mucopren® Adhesive with a brush onto the cleaned, prepared and roughened denture surface using a brush twice with an interval of 30 seconds. Allow to dry well before proceeding. It is important that the adhesive is applied over and past the edge. With the help of the application gun, apply Mucopren® soft (not the sealing silicone) evenly and insert directly into the patient mouth or plaster model.

In the mouth:
During the remaining working time, make the Mucopren® soft silicone material flow well through active and passive functional movements,
so that it achieves an individual and desired fit and requires only local final treatment.

On the model: First place the plaster model in lukewarm water for 10 minutes and then separate (use an agent that will form a micro film (e.g. Isolant® from Dentsply). Place the denture with the still workable Mucopren® soft onto  the model and press fast. Surplus Mucopren® soft can be wiped off and smoothed with soap suds.
Your fingers are best suited to do that.

Step three – activate the adhesive

The permanence is vitally dependent on the activation of the adhesive. By placing the denture with the soft reliner in a water bath (45 – 50°C) for 15 – 20 minutes directly after removing it from the patient's mouth, one will receive a permanent super bond of the Mucopren® soft to the denture material.

During indirect relining, the relining apparatus or cuvette must be placed in a pressure pot with hot water of 45 – 50°C for at least 30 minutes in order to achieve the same
hardening time. After that, the possibly sealed denture can be placed in the pressure pot (45 – 50°C) for at least 45 minutes with or without the plaster model.

Step four - finish

The local finishing is carried out by first removing surplus material with a pair of fine scissors. Steel burs with cross cuts are suitable for course finishing of permanently soft relining materials, which will then receive a smooth and seamless surface with the especially designed polishing instruments. (I myself work with the Soft Reliner Polishing Set from Edenta, Order-Nr: 2110 SO).

Thanks to these special polishing discs, the sealing silicone is normally not needed. You should now have an astonishing result with a guaranteed wearing period of at least one year. The roughened synthetic surfaces can be polished using the usual procedures. If polishing fat is used, this must first be thoroughly removed with hot water.

“I was pleasantly surprised when I got to know Mucopren® soft from Kettenbach.
A relining material, based on vinyl polysiloxane, for direct or indirect use, which bonds well. The first permanently soft and comfortable soft liner!”

Step five – seal

If desired, a thin layer of Mucopren® sealing silicone can be applied to the completely finished surface of the permanently soft relining material.

It is recommended to place the appropriate amount of Mucopren® sealing silicone in an appropriate cup (see plastic insert) and to spread with a brush within 90 seconds. After 6 minutes and 30 seconds, the Mucopren® sealing silicone will not stick anymore and the denture is ready to be worn in the mouth. Attention: The final mechanical properties of the sealing silicone are only achieved after the denture is placed in a pressure pot with 50°C warm water again afterwards for 45 minutes, or has been worn in the mouth for several hours.

Working and setting times
  • Direct relining: working time - 2 minutes 15 seconds, intra oral time - 3 minutes 15 sec, total setting time - 5 minutes 30 secs.
  • Indirect relining: working time - 2 min 15 seconds, setting time: 30 minutes in a pressure pot.

If the product temperature deviates significantly from 23° C, this effects working and setting times. The water temperature and the time in the water bath are decisive factors for an ideal bond.

Aftercare

Due to the applied sealing silicone in the direct technique, the patient should wait 2 hours before eating. Cleaning of the denture can be carried out carefully with a soft tooth brush and toothpaste. Mechanical cleaning of the denture is permitted after the second day.

Product advantages

The patented Mucopren® adhesive guarantees excellent bonding to acrylic dentures, prevents loosening from the denture and gap formation between the denture acrylic and silicone liner. The smooth hydrophobic silicone surface prevents inflammation of the denture-bearing area and guarantees hygienic denture conditions and long-term period in situ. Permanent elasticity ensures high intraoral comfort and relieves critical areas of the oral mucosa.
